先週末のこと。
「地の果て」を思わせる荒涼とした海岸が広がるケント州はダンジェネスへ行ってきました。
ここには映画監督、舞台デザイナー、作家、園芸家だったデレク・ジャーマンが暮らしたコテージと彼が作り上げた庭があります。
庭は一般公開されていますが、コテージはプライベートで非公開。
ちょっとお邪魔します、という感じで見学しました。
海岸の漂流物を並べて作ったという庭は、どことなくシュールな感じで、周りの風景にしっくりと馴染んでおりました。
なんせ、コテージの背後には原子力発電所（上の写真の左上）、眼前に広がるのはこんな↓海岸、というロケーションなんですもの（ダンジェネスの風景は、もうひとつのブログをご参照あれ）。

デレクがここで暮らしていた頃の写真を見ると、当時とさほど変わっていないようです。

コテージの側壁にあるのは、John Donne の「The Sun Rising」という詩の一節。
Busy old fool, unruly sun,

Late school boys and sour prentices,
